The class is slowly getting filled, it is auditorium-like, much like in classical American universities. On the stand are drawn magic circles and sigils that are glowing and humming ominously. It is 10:22, 5 minutes before the beginning of the class, scheduled at 10:27. For most of these students it is their first class with professor Salathiell and the title of the course along with the unusual time succeeded in confusing most of them. At 10:27 precisely, the light of the magic circles increases and a shape appears. It seemingly is a young looking man, with squared glasses and a satchel across the shoulder.
“Hey students. I’m Professor Salathiell, Arcane Spirit. I’ve been called many names such as The-One-That-Knows-All, Le Roi des Furrets, Subete no mahō no sōsu, Die een wat te veel praat, Fear nu Maer Angol, among others. You can all call me prof Sal. In this course we will explore the fundamentals of all magics, from its origins to its inner mechanisms. It’ll be great.”
He then faces the board and starts to write:
“What is magic?” He says while writing. “Scholars have asked themselves that question since they first created a spark with it. Some may call it a power, others a proof of the existence of some kind of God, I call it a force. Magic is part of the world, just like the wind or the seasons. Left alone it doesn’t do anything, it simply exists. However, all living beings have the potential to influence this phenomenon in a way of their choosing … well usually. For instance “ Voco iridis ignae!”
At this instant, multicolored flames appeared surrounding the stand, seemingly devouring the podium and its occupant. A few seconds later, Salathiell emerged from the blaze intact. He then waved and gathered all the flames in the palm of his hands, reducing the fire to a candleflamme on each of his fingertips.
“Magics is a powerful tool and its limits are only those of your imagination. Some may try to teach you that some things cannot be done, or that some shouldn’t be done. Do not listen to these persons. Magic is part of the world and as such should be used and celebrated, not feared and silenced. Now, Mortem Ignis.”
With these words Salathiell blew softly on his fingers, blowing away the rainbow of fire that still shone. He then stood, taller it seemed, looking at his classroom.
“It is now time to really start this course. In the past few minutes, I have performed three feats of magic: I have conjured the illusory fire, gathered it in my hands, and blew it off. I did not do these things randomly; each feat correspond to one of the three possible mode of magic. In my studies, I have established that there were three ways of doings magic, each using two out of the three basic constituent of all magical power. Can anyone guess some of these constituents and what combination was used in each feat?”
Salathiell then throw and appraising look at his classroom, hoping for a light that would outshine the other, a brilliant mind with whom he could share some of the long hours of the school year.

Ayanna barged into the filling classroom. spilling her papers all over the floor "good job sis, you managed to get us lost.... again." she picked up her stuff, trying as best as she could to regain composure after their eventful first class. "10:26." she sighed in relief, "he's still not here, class has yet to start." The duo sat down, taking the closets seat to the front, as custom. They liked being close to the teacher, especially when the teacher happened to be one of the only people they knew who could read both their minds at once, and discuss with both of them directly. "Shit Ayanna." "what is it bro?" "We wore a yellow bow-tie." It was 10:27, and right on cue, the prof appeared. As the twins fret over their outfit, the teacher went on. Can anyone guess some of these constituents and what combination was used in each feat?” "damn it....I'm sure we know this..." the twins whispered, but all this stressing about their outfit and the color yellow completely blocked them.

‘’Experimental Magyks and Applied Spellcasting class at 10:27’’ Alkaia read on her schedule as she was aimlessly flying on the back of her pet hippogriff. Hmm… might as well go since I missed my first class.. gosh I knew that chatting with trolls last night wasn’t a good idea! I always end up talking for hours and completely forget that I need to wake up early for the next day!
The class could be interesting, she thought. Alkaia had decided this year to focus more on developing her magical abilities since she had spent most of last year studying magical creatures and environments. It was now time to improve her skills related to her affinity with earth and try to catch up with her brother who is miles ahead of her in that domain.
She managed to arrive a few minutes before the start and sat near the window so she’d be able to peek at her pet from time to time.
“It is now time to really start this course. In the past few minutes, I have performed three feats of magic: I have conjured the illusory fire, gathered it in my hands, and blew it off. Can anyone guess some of these constituents and what combination was used in each feat?”
Alkaia didn’t understand much of what the teacher was saying, in fact, she had her eyes fixed on the blank board from the beginning of the class. It was green… just like the forest! Ah such a beautiful color… It would be even prettier if I’d….
She then closed her eyes and firmly concentrated on making vines appear at the sides of the class board. Much better! She thought as she glanced back at the board now decorated with trailing plants of various colors.
- I don't think I know the answer to your question sir. However, your class will look much better this way!

Eyildr looked confusely at her book and at the door in front of her. She wasn't so sure that this was the right place, after all, even the time seemed wrong. 10:27, who started a class at 10:27 anyways? The black haired nymph turned to her twin with an unsure expression, "I'm not sure as to whether the class is supposed to be here or if I took down the number of the room wrong. I'm not sure for the time either, now that I think of it." She whispered mentally to her twin. Curse the lack of official schedule in this book, sticky notes on boards could always be a prank. What if this was simply a joke from a student of a higher grade? The girl bit her tongue and turned around to face the room yet again. "If this was a prank, we leave?" she asked Elevine mentally.
For the next few seconds, the nymph stood close to the doorway, hesitantly stepping forth and back. You see, it was really easy for Eyildr to doubt herself and knowing that her twin hadn't taken down the information made her doubt her scribbles even more. At last, she stepped in the room. It was 10:24 and nothing seemed to be actually going on. No teacher, no real conversations, no action. But at least, at least, after quickly scanning the room, she recognized a few students from the class yesterday. "So perhaps I wasn't that wrong," she mentally said in relief. Hesitantly, the storm nymph made her way to two chairs available. She sent a quick glance at her sister, to make sure that she was following, and she sat down. From then on, the seconds turned into minutes, and minutes into hours. Waiting for something you're unsure about could really be long and stressful. Every now and again, the nymph hit her head on the desk. The rest of the time, she passed through the pages of her book, looking for hidden messages (unsuccessfully), or observed the others in the classroom. At one point, she noticed a brown haired boy sitting in the first row. She remembered crossing him in the hallways, but had yet to be introduced. After a while, the lights in the room changed and the teacher appeared. "Hey students. It’ll be great." Eyildr frowned at this mix of languages, why try to confuse everyone so early on? "Were we supposed to understand more than the first part?" she asked her sister.
The class kept progressing. The teacher headed for the board and started writing down stuff about magic. After a few seconds, the black haired girl decided that writing down what was on the board could end up being useful and she grabbed her pen. Quickly scribbling down everything she could see, she jumped in surprise when the teacher started playing with fire. Her first reflex? Growling, she hated the sight of fire powers so bad. But she bit her lower lip and calmed herself; she wasn't a water nymph after all. People didn't choose their powers.
The nymph frowned and looked at her sister, seeking answers. "Well, he created, transformed and destroyed, I guess.? But what do I know about magic.. Right! He said illusory fire. Hm.. mental, physical.. and something..? Do you have any idea?" she asked her sister through telepathy. She didn't like not knowing and the possibility of being asked about the matter was making her anxious now. She scanned the room, looking for people who might seem to know, but her eyes quickly stopped on the board. Vines had grown on it? "I don't think I know the answer to your question sir. However, your class will look much better this way!" said an unknown voice. Eyildr placed her hand on her mouth and quieted a laugh. It wasn't that bad to be confused after all.

Post by Qadir al-Jinn on Apr 8, 2015 15:09:03 GMT -5
Qadir was looking forward to this next class. "Experimental Magyks and Applied Spellcasting" sounded like an interesting and, he hoped, more standard class than the ones he had yesterday.
It takes Qadir slightly longer than expected to find the room. It turned out to be on the opposite side of the castle than Pharos' class had been yesterday. He cringed slightly at the memory. Hopefully tempers would be slightly less frayed for this class. Honestly, if this is what normal schools were like, then Qadir blamed his brothers slightly less for not letting him go.
The room was a cavernous thing that reminded Qadir of an auditorium he had visited once back ho- back in Dubai. Sitting in the middle of the front of the room was a stand covered in strange, occult runes and circles that hummed with strange light. The rest of the room was only half-full, the clock reading 10:24- fully three minutes before class was due to start. Either students weren't worried about being late, or he hadn't been the only one to have difficulty finding the class, or maybe they were confused by the stupid-ass starting time of the class. Seriously, who starts class at 10:27? The teacher himself, Professor Salathiell according to Qadir's schedule, was clearly some sort of eccentric. He was also nowhere to be seen yet.
He settled himself down near the front of the room alongside the wall- close enough to the front so as to not miss anything but out of the way enough to avoid attracting the spotlight. A couple more students filed in after Qadir and set themselves up here and there, thought he only recognized a handful of them. The Twins-Who-Were-One found their way into the classroom less than a minute before the class, bursting in spilling papers everywhere before settling themselves- herself?- right in the middle of the front of the class, less than a meter from the strange stand. Qadir shook his head.
At precisely 10:27 (Qadir was looking at his watch) the runes and symbols on the stand flashed brightly, temporarily blinding the students. Qadir was pretty sure he heard someone swear.
Once the light cleared a young man stood behind the podium. He looked perhaps in his mid-twenties, bore thick-rimmed square glasses and had a bag draped over a shoulder.
Oh my God, Qadir thought. My magic teacher looks like an American university student.
The man wasted no time. No sooner had the class regained use of their optical nerves then he had started talking. "Hey students," he said. "I’m Professor Salathiell, Arcane Spirit. It’ll be great."
He turned on his heel and started writing on blackboard behind him and started monologuing. Qadir spent a few seconds scrambling for a writing utensil and came out with a quill with a sense of surrealism. This school is weird. Shaking his head, Qadir started taking notes.
He had barely caught up with Salathiell's lesson when the professor said something vaguely Latin-sounding and rainbow-coloured flames engulfed the stand. Qadir nearly fell out of his chair except-wait. That's not actually fire? he thought, surprised not only at the thought but his certainty in it. Must be a Djinn thing, he decided.
As he had this epiphany, the fire coalesced into a small flame no larger than a finger sitting in the professor's palm. With a few more words, he dismissed the 'fire'.
"It is now time to really start this course," he announced. Qadir groaned, looking at all the notes he had already taken, God damnit. "In the past few minutes, I have performed three feats of magic: I have conjured the illusory fire, gathered it in my hands, and blew it off. I did not do these things randomly; each feat correspond to one of the three possible mode of magic. In my studies, I have established that there were three ways of doings magic, each using two out of the three basic constituent of all magical power. Can anyone guess some of these constituents and what combination was used in each feat?"
Qadir furrowed his brow at the question. That seemed a bit abstract for a first class. Then again, he supposed, most of these other students have spent their lives up to their elbows in magical happenings.
He heard someone say something from the other side of the classroom and vines sprouted from the board behind the teacher. Oh no, Qadir thought. The teacher didn't seem to have noticed it yet and the last thing Qadir wanted was for him to notice and get angry at the class.
Not pausing to think about it, Qadir raised his hand. "Err, I suppose a natural predisposition to magic is needed to do it?" he said, tentatively and then all at once. "I mean, for example, a normal human can't just create fire, but for a Djinn it's a simple as breathing. Though I suppose it is possible for so-called 'normal humans' to use magic, because there are countless tales of old wise men and imams capable of binding magical forces to their wills, sometimes even overcoming the supposedly stronger magical creatures. Thought I guess not anyone can do magic because, well, not everyone can do magic so there has to be something that is not generally available to humans wile not necessarily being out of reach. Maybe it can be taught but then again it might not be, because otherwise it would be far more widespread than it is, given humanity's panache for industrializing and exploiting everything, especially considering the extraordinary potential magic has..." Qadir trailed off when he noticed he had started rambling. Blushing, he realized he had stood up at some point in his disjointed discourse and sat back down. "So yeah."

Post by ilsila moon on Apr 8, 2015 19:05:44 GMT -5
I quickly padded through the hallway holding my new bag close so it doesn’t make too much noise, the classes is about to start in a few minutes and I got lost… I know it’s my first day but goddamnit! I look down at my map again trying to make sense of the complicated architecture of the magics school. “Ugh why did I think it was a good idea to hunt last night?” I whispered to myself as I let out a huge yawn. I glance up at one of the many clocks littering the school, god damn it 5 more minutes until I’m officially branded late for class, what a great start to the first day. I can see a girl down the hallway that looks just as lost as I am and twice as pissed off. She looks around at the room numbers and suddenly out of pure frustration she lets out a frustrated growl and rips up her map and throws the bits on the ground. Before she could take another step the map magically reassembles itself and pops into her hands, I’ve never seen so much seething rage in anyone like that before. I eventually get close enough to the girl and decide to talk to her “Hey you got lost to the magycs class too?” I stop and she looks up slowly glares at me, for a tiny little thing she’s pretty intimidating. “Do you know where you’re going?” she stated flatly I give her a smug smile “just as lost as you are” “Well this is just fucking great!” she curses and I could feel her urge to rip up the map re-emerge. “Name’s Ilsila.” I quickly mentioned as I studied my map, flipping it every which way trying to solve the mystery of the lost classroom, “I didn’t ask for your name I’m looking for my class” she spat, I could faintly see the dark circles under her eyes, oh she’s just as tired as I am “Well I guess if you have it under control…” I taunted “Do I look like I have it under control to you?!” she yelled at me, I decided it’d be a better Idea to not slit her throat “Hey just saying. Plus I dunno ‘bout you but I think we’d have more chances of finding the damned thing together” I leveled with her, hey I needed help ok? “all I know is that its next to a green plant and it’s on this floor, but since this place is a bloody maze I can’t find anything close to it” her grumbling barely audible but just as ticked off, a green plant? Oh yeah right were in a magic school magic plants riiiight. “wait a minute I remember seeing a green plant down that way” I point back the way I came from, I could see her eyes narrow down into a death glare that could probably even make the devil cower in fear “What did you just say?” and I thought she couldn’t have been angrier “There was uh… a… um” I stutter and nervously play with my braid, she viciously grabs the neck of my tank top and starts pulling me in the direction of the class. I have no choice but to follow along as she shows me to the class. We quickly made it to class with minutes to spare and find seats in the 3rd row next to each other in the huge auditorium, other students of all species and nationalities either casually looking through their agendas or notes and others making chit chat with their companions. literally as soon as we sit down the teeny girl flops on the desk and is completely knocked out head resting on one of her arms whereas the other one leans off the table in probably the least graceful position in the world. I let out a sigh and decide to at least make it look like she’s listening, I grab her books out of her bag and place them right under her arm and place one of my spare pencils in her limp hand making sure it doesn’t fall out as well as reposition her so it looks like she is attentive, well you know for a person with their eyes closed. I glance down at the name on her notebook, Rose, a beautiful and delicate flower with a powerful red hue. Yep sounds about right. I chuckle at the thought of this intimidating little creature as “delicate”. I keep my smile and take out my own books and try to prepare myself for the class. Who starts a class at fucking 10:27 anyways!? Damn this much drama and the school year has barely even begun, I quickly snap my attention to the glowing sigils on the chalk board ready for my lesson.

Post by Rose Aileen on Apr 8, 2015 19:26:00 GMT -5
Glancing up once again reading the door number and back to her map, Rose has never felt so frustrated in her entire life. "What kind of shit ass schedule is this?!?" She cursed inwardly as she glares at her map that the head mistress gave her on her very first day. Rose was seriously starting to feel fed up with this stupid system, first she missed her first class because she overslept, which now she is carrying what feels like a million tons aka school books and now she didn’t have a single clue where she was. Glancing at her watch and at her map once more, five more minutes, five more minutes before I'm screwed… glancing up to the door hoping to god that her quest to finding this bloody class would end. Nope wrong, "Arg!!! stupid fucking bloody hell!" She screamed while ripping the map to shreds only to have it reappear into her hands.
"hey you got lost to magic class too?" as Rose glance up there was a snow leopard human-ish type thing, she seemed nice but given the situation Rose wanted nothing more then to rip up the map again and shove it down her throat regardless of who it was. Slowing her breathing she tried to calm herself, being fully aware that this girl hasn’t done anything to deserve being choke, yet that is. She let out a deep sigh "do you know where you're going" she asked with a glimpse of hope that this encounter wouldn’t be completely useless. "Just as lost as you" are she responded nonchalantly.
Great she is completely useless Rose thought to herself. "well this is just fucking great!!" glancing at her map yet again trying to make sense of it, "name’s Ilsila" "I didn’t ask for your name I'm looking for my class" she snap back. well I guess if you have it under control… Ilsila taunted back and Rose would have any of that bullshit. "Do I look like I have under control?!" yelling again to the hybrid, hey just saying. Plus I dunno ‘bout you but I think we’d have more chance finding the damned thing together she claimed while looking down face to face with Rose. Sighing in defeat Rose had to agree, she couldn’t bear the idea of being lost for another minute. She had visited the entire school via astral projection but she couldn’t remember much from her trip, plus the bloody walls all look the exact same thing. "All I know is that its next to a green plant and its on this floor, but since this place is a bloody maze I cant find anything close to it." Normally claiming that a classroom is close to a green plant would be a silly statement but giving that on her exhibition to finding this bloody class she has saw many strange things, so many that a rainbow plant would be considered normal. wait a minute I remember seeing a green plant down that way she stated while pointing the opposite direction. Words couldn’t describe the anger that has engulfed Rose from that moment, "what did you say?" She hissed, actually amazed that she was able to say anything at all considering how she felt at that moment. there was uh….a… um she stuttered while playing with her braid.
Of all the idiots Rose thought to herself while grabbing the neck of her tank top and dragging her to their class. They quickly made it into a class with a couple minutes to spare, Rose let out a sigh of relief seeing as they had beaten the teacher to his own class. They chose a seat on the third row and before Rose knew it she was out like a light.

Post by Salathiell on Apr 13, 2015 21:02:20 GMT -5
After asking his question, Salathiell looked up to the classroom, ready to differentiate those with real talent from the usual student assisting to a mandatory class (who told them his class was mandatory he had no idea). Suddenly, some vines appeared on the board behind him with a girl saying: I don't think I know the answer to your question sir. However, your class will look much better this way! "Thank you, however, tentative answers are still highly recommended, especially when you dispose of the solution within yourself. To give a clue: what the young lady here did used the same two elements as I when I gathered the illusory fire in my hands. Now, does anyone want to make an attempt at impressing me?"Right then, a young student that seemed absorbed in his thoughts suddenly raised his hands. "Err, I suppose a natural predisposition to magic is needed to do it?" He said, looking a bit scared then, as if touched by knowledge itself "I mean, for example, a normal human can't just create fire, but for a Djinn it's a simple as breathing. Maybe it can be taught but then again it might not be, because otherwise it would be far more widespread than it is, given humanity's panache for industrializing and exploiting everything, especially considering the extraordinary potential magic has..." The Djinn then realised he was standing up and that the whole classroom was looking at him. With a last. "So yeah." He sat down surprisingly looking both proud and ashamed. Well seems like this promotion was not completely hopeless after all. Note to self: Look up this student’s file, he might make a fine intern…“What mister … hmm… “ Salathiell conjured what seemed like a bunch of random symbols, looked at them for a second " mister al-Jinn said here is very close to the truth. You are indeed right, natural predisposition to magic can be a great help. In this class we will refer to it as Power, and it is one of the three elements I was looking for. Mister Al-Jinn is also right we he says that magic can be learned. Unknowingly he referred to the second of the three elements of magic, Knowledge. The last element, the one that is usually left out is named Faith. In order to use magic, one must use two out of these three elements, which allows for three different combination. “ Salathiell straightened up, sparkles in the eyes (literally) “Now let us define the three components of magic in order to better understand its inner working. “
“The first, and most obvious is the Power. Power is the inner connection that living things have with magic, a natural force of the universe. It can be very strong in some creatures like Spirits, Elementals or other magical beings but it can also be completely non-existent, in most humans for instance, where only very few, usually called psychics, are born with such a connection. Associated with one of the two other factors, Power can be a real deal breaker when facing a magical problem. Even if one is born with a fixed potential Power, that connection must still be trained and developed in order to be used to its full potential.”
“The second, Knowledge, is the element that deals with the rituals, the incantations, all the techniques that were used in order to bind magic. Incidentally, it is the element with which I work best. Magic, as any other natural phenomenon, is governed by a set of rules which can be exploited, alongside one of the two other elements, to do magic. Part of Knowledge are the sigils, the magic circles, the ancient languages. These symbols and idioms describe the world as it was earlier, when magic play a greater part in the world. The older the Knowledge, the more efficient it will probably be, even if some new rituals can be surprisingly spot on. In one sentence, Knowledge is the most accurate possible expression of the original chaos from which magic is originated and the more one know about it, the more one can use Knowledge.”
“Finally, Faith is the last element. Related to one’s strength on will, or one’s imagination, Faith represents one’s ability to make what one wants come true. Of all elements it is the simplest yet it is also the harder to master. In order to properly use Faith, one must desire the outcome with all one’s mind, heart and soul. One must believe it to be already true, to be a full part of reality. Then, and only with the assistance of one of the two other elements, may magic occur.”
Salathiell made a break, looking at his classroom now completely silent. Have I started with something too hard? I hope I didn’t lose them already… He thought, truly worried. "Therefore, when I used magic earlier I used all three possible combination: Knowledge and Power when I used an incantation to create an illusion defined by the incantation, Power and Faith when I, by an effort of will, gathered the flames in my hand and then finally, Faith and Knowledge when used a simple incantation to make the illusion vanish, by refusing to believe in its existence."Salathiell then started to draw a diagram on the board. "On this diagram you can see a visual representation of the three elements of magic, their combinations and what combination races typically use. This is obviously only valid as a general rule." "As you can see, Humans can only use the Knowledge and Faith combination when other magical being, who have the advantage of power can use all three. However, Elementals, Djinns, Dryades and other beings linked with natural phenomenon tend to use the Faith and Power combination. The knowledge and power combination is more often used by magical civilisations through rituals and spells. Spirits are shown in the middle due to the large variety of them which makes it impossible to determine a favoured combination. But again, if one posses Power, then one can use all three combination."
"If you have any questions about today’s material please ask them now if not, here is the assignment for next class: Write a short paragraph about what type(s) of magic can you use (the mix of what two elements) and give concrete examples you are capable of performing yourself."(After answering to the questions)As Salathiell was tidying things up before going he addressed the class absent-mindedly “Oh I almost forgot, I generally hire the few top best students of this class as intern for my experimental magic research. This is a position of great honor which can give access to a lot of knowledge and learning opportunities. I will contact the chosen students shortly.” “Oh and also, to the girl who is sleeping in the third row, you might as well leave your body in your room next time, at least that way you’ll be sure to keep it safe. Also, the classroom will be easier to find, just follow the spirit lights.”Salathiell then walked away from the classroom, closing the door behind him, leaving his students behind in various states of mind, going from pure shock to total incomprehension.

Ayanna tried her best to think. A girl she'd seen before, Alkai something She thought, seemed to think it'd 've a good idea to liter the board with vines. "ugh, I hate greens. They're so humid and... Earthy..." Ayanna said, wanting so desperately to freeze the vines. She noticed the black haired nymph out of the corner of her eye. one student tried to answer the question, some hellishly long answer about needing to have some predisposition to magic. the guy was definitely an enthusiastic, he literally got so carried away he stood up. "As you can see, Humans can only use the Knowledge and Faith combination when other magical being, who have the advantage of power can use all three.
"so someone like us," Ayanna said, holding out her hand and letting a baseball sized ice diamond form in her hand, "has power and faith. But is the middle intersection of the three only reserved to spirits? by that I mean sir, that u mention different combinations being possible, but say, had we been born in a less secluded place, with elder elementals who have studied our art and the art of other magical being, and hence have Knowledge, and yet power, and faith. These elementals do not have preferences however, they just possess all three. I guess what we mean to ask isnt if one can have all three since you've established that, but rather, if all three are known, shouldn't we use all three, shouldn't we have no preferences and simply combined the three to create harmonious magic. Wouldn't this then be almost perfect magic? Also, sorry for the lengthy questions. But shouldn't humans also be capable of acquiring power. I mean, when my brother and I use our powers." She paused, blowing onto the ice diamond, sending frost towards the board at the front of the class, letting icicles form onto the vines, "they do come naturally. We don't have to think, we just do. But when we stop and decorticate everything, all we're truly doing is taking either any of the heat sources if Aédan is out, or the colder sources if I'm out, for instance, a metal bottle which is cold, or the body temperature s of all who surround us, we take that energy, add it all up, combine it, mold it, and viola.... Heh...I don't know if any of what I just said made sense. But yeh."
Ayanna stopped talking. The class was already about to end.
"*sigh* sis, don't try to impress this teach. I'm pretty sure the guy with the foreign name did that already. " "Aédan, we're here to learn. Please let me try at least." She was always the one trying to get the best of grades, unlike her brother who was more of a survivalist "No sis, we're here cuz it's safe and we have no where to go And this is home. "
