Finally, he also is able to bend light in order to make illusions, an ability which he uses to illustrate his lessons.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: As a merman, from the waist down Rasoan is a startlingly blue-green fish, equipped with gills, small fins and a powerful tail. An intricate scar is clearly visible on the pale-white belly part of the tail: the sign of waves with a single gash cutting through it. He tends to hide it. From the waist up, Rasoan looks like a kindly old grandpa, always smiling with a twinkle in his eyes, which can get kind of creepy because he doesn't have eyelids and so cannot blink.
PLAYBY: old!bearded!Robin Williams
HISTORY:
The merpeople are nomadic and solitary by nature, never frequenting an area for too long. This is mostly due to their need for secrecy- it's difficult to remain anonymous in the ocean if you always stay at the same place, even with the psychic abilities most merpeople possess. Rasoan was hatched near the coast of Alaska and his clutch was picked up by the passing pod, the most largest pod in the northern Pacific.
He spent much of the first fifty or so years of his life living with this pod. There, he learnt to harness his strange psychic powers of Hindsight. Unfortunately, Hindsight is a lot less valuable to the usually pragmatic merpeople, and while he was tolerate, his predieliction for the past and otherwise forgotten, coupled with his melancholy predisposition, led to a disconnect between himself and his cohort. This was brought to the forefront when they encountered a group of ocean nymphs. He was smitten, taken in by their long lifespans. He spent hours asking them their tales, the stories they knew, about both themselves and their sister nymphs. His pod waited for him impatiently, and finally Rasoan was forced to follow them.
Five years later, near the coast of Japan, Rasoan was separated from the pod during a particularly viscous storm. Remembering the story about storm nymphs that he heard from the ocean nymphs, Rasoan called out to them with his lights and, with their help, managed to find the eye of the storm, where he safely waited out the storm. Once the storm had cleared, Rasoan gave the storm nymphs a cheerful farewell and went out to return to his pod. What he found was disaster. The storm had thrown the majority of the pod up against a nearby island, killing seventy-odd of their people- well over half of the pod. When they saw Rasoan returning, they demanded to know how he had survived the storm. Rasoan eagerly told them of the storm nymphs that had saved him, and how he had befriended them. The rest of the pod turned against him. How dare he, the useless storyteller, live when so many others had died, how dare he befriend the nymphs of the very storm that slew them?
Rasoan was chased away from the pod in shame as a traitor, earning his scar in the process which marked him as podless. No pod would take in one with that mark which was usually reserved for rapists and murderers.
He spent the next years of his life working his way around the coast of Asia. On his journeys, he befriended a whole slew of various sea creatures as well as those who would approach the coast. He spent the better part of a year along the coast of Saudi Arabia with a small settlement of Djinn, trading stories of the sands for stories of the seas. From them, he also learnt of the Library of Alexandria, an ancient repertoire of knowledge that was lost centuries ago due to human stupidity. Intrigued, Rasoan made it his mission to use his unique powers to restore the Library to its former glory.
Through no small effort, Rasoan crossed the Suez Canal and made it to the coasts of Alexandria. There, he spent years alternating between deep trance and Archiving the writings of the ancients. Eventually, word of his work reached the ears of the Headmistress of the Scholae Elementorum. She offered him a place at the Scholae as a teacher, but Rasoan declined, stating that he was not finished with his work.
Thirty-six years later, on his 100th birthday, Rasoan decided it was time for his work to come to an end. He sent word back to the Headmistress, accepting her offer at last, and taking his place as the Archivist and Professor of Magical History and Creatures.
FAMILY: Some of his clutch is probably still alive, he wants nothing to do with them, and they less with him.
