NAME: Walharuna
AGE: A thousand years, give or take?
GENDER: Female
SCHOOLING YEAR: Teacher
SPECIES: Valkyrie
PLACE OF ORIGIN: Denmark
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Walharuna is a Valkyrie; a grim-reaper of the Norse mythology. Through the years, she has grown quite distant to death, accepting it as a simple part of life with no actual consequences. However, the one thing that still gets to her, is whenever she happens to see children die. It shouldn't occur so young.
Overall, the woman is really fond of the children she trains, she cares for them as if they were her own. The Valkyrie is quite motherly, one could say, because children are the strength of the future and a village that does not protect its youth only deserves to loose its elders in the least important battles.
Speaking of conflicts, moments of great battles are quite dear to the Valkyrie. During those, she used to follow the side cheered for. As the warriors would fall, her motivation never faltered and she carried the ones she believed deem of meeting the gods to Valhalla. Once to this place, they would become part of Odin's army and train in preparation for Ragnarok. To thos day, this love and pride for fights still shines in the eyes of the woman. Victory is optional, but she never looses her fights.
LIKES: cold, warriors, fights
DISLIKES: warmth, peace, defeat, Ragnarok (norse end of the world)
STRENGTHS: seeing the potential of people (required to choose the ones that are bound to go to Valhalla), handle weapons really easily, good knowledge of northern history
WEAKNESSES: cannot stand warmth, gets bored easily, doesn't understand modern weapons
FEARS: Ragnarok, being defeated by a southerner
POWER(S): During the years of training that follow the death of a Valkyrie, they learn a variety of fighting skills. Of course, they are not meant to use them in their daily lives, but when the time would come, it would serve. This granted Walharuna wonderful fighting abilities (also granted by her young years as a viking).
Seeing dead people: Pretty straight forward really, she can see ghosts and other beings of the mental scape.
Control over ice: That pretty much says it. She can turn water into ice and make shapes of ice. The power is limited to the temperature, obviously. Whenever the temperature is warmer than 0C, the ice melts way faster, if it can be made at all.
Fly: Obviously, wings gives a being the capacity to fly. It's just that Walharuna never really uses it.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Walharuna is a nordic woman of legend, so it doesn't require much thinking to get a general idea of her looks. She has long blonde hair that she ties in a side braid, to keep it out of the way. Her Northern origins have given her a pale skin and a good immunity to cold. Her eyes are of a pale blue shade quite similar to thick ice really. The Valkyrie also has wings, but they can only be seen in the mental scape.
When it comes to her clothes, Walharuna remained quite old fashioned through the years, always keeping a viking feeling to it. She wears clothes that are mostly useful for battles; ample but not baggy. She usually is seen wearing few layers of tunics of different sizes and length, along with furs sometimes. It might seem as if she was overdoing it, but it's quite comfy in winter weather.
Walharuna also always carries a sword. Warrior forever.
HISTORY: After a thousand years, there is so much to say. But to not bore everyone, let's keep it to the essential.
Walharuna was born in a Danish viking village in the late 900's. The small tribe, raised under the belief that they could take over every single village they wanted to, thanks to the protection of Odin and the Valkyries, thought children at a really young age the arts of fighting and sailing. Thereby, the young girl this story is all about, soon learnt how to use a sword and participate in battles properly. The training would last until her 13th birthday.
After that date, the life of the viking child became one of a warrior. Following the experienced men and women of the tribe, Walharuna sailed the seas in direction of other pieces of land that she would be able to conquer. Once the mission completed, the villagers would take food and supplies, to bring them back to the Danish village, and feed the people. It truly was a good life; a life of conquest and discovery, everything to please the young soul.
Another important change occurred when Walharuna was 21 years old. Already mother of a strong little boy, she was expecting a second one to follow in the next 2 moons. Vikings always having a certain common sense, it was normal to let women with child at the village; anyways they wouldn't be that useful on the battlefields. It was frustrating for the young adult, but it was acceptable. One of the nights, while warriors were off to conquer southerners, the Danish village was attacked. Very little people with fighting skills remained in town, which forced Walharuna to guide the children and elders to safety; a desperate attempt to protect as many people as people as possible. Covering their escape were the small handful of warriors that were in charge of protecting the village.
The night went by, screams echoing in the night with a never wavering strength. By dawn, the fights quieted. Walharuna quickly checked over the survivors and decided to go scan the area, in search for enemies. Before long, she found a group of enemy survivors, heading straight for the hiding place of the villagers. The viking took her sword in hands and ran at them, using the surprise effect. Without allowing them the time to realize what was happening, two of the warriors were slaughtered and the blonde girl ran off. Guiding the men towards the more foreign and confusing parts of the forest, the viking prayed the gods for protection and for the enemies to lose themselves in the woods. Greatly slowed down by the baby she held in her stomach, Walharuna eventually ran out of breath and was surrounded.
Until her last breath she fought the assailants with all her might.
The viking girl woke up at the table of Odin, surrounded by a large amount of Valkyries. Frowning at the realization that she probably wasn't at the table of warriors in Valhalla, the fighter inquired about the situation to the o' mighty god by her side. Apparently, she had proven the strength of her will to protect others, which would enable her to join Odin's army of grim-reapers. For the next 3 centuries, the girl would be trained intensively to the different arts of war and ways to choose the best warriors, among the dead.
With no real choice, Walharuna accepted the offer and entered the special training of the gods.
Around the 14th century, the viking finished her training and joined the ranks of the Valkyries. Never partaking in any fights, she would pass from battlefield to battlefield to collect the souls of the deceased and carry the worthy ones to the table of warriors, in Valhalla.
Centuries went by with no considerable change, creating a feeling of boredom in the young viking. She could not partake in fights, she could not give her opinion on war matters and on top of that, she had to watch over stupid military progressions without saying a word. At last, she grew tired during world war I; one could only stand a certain level of idiocy.
Progressively, the Valkyrie started showing herself to military leaders, advising them on certain techniques to use in battles and certain places to strike. She had all the time in the world to observe the opponents; Nordic countries were not partaking in the war.
Odin quickly realized the implication of one of his soldiers in the human affairs and called back Walharuna to his table. Trying to contain his anger, the man informed the Valkyrie that she was banned from the other levels of Yggdrasil than Midgar for the next century. She would be allowed to come back in 2017, but not before. During the century off she was given, she was allowed to travel the world and do as she pleased; the point being for her to understand that human never listened nor evolved through the help of magical beings.
Walharuna took her exile lightly, she would be able to do as she please and fight as much as she want. Accepting her destiny with a smile bow, she left for Midgar and started travelling the land in search for places of conflict. One of the first stops, among many others was Russia, where she observed the unraveling of a dark succession of events to get rid the monarchy. Drastic measure and bad results. Perhaps things would look up again in a few decades, when the regime gained in strength, she thought. With that, she resumed her travels all around until she accidentally found herself in Denmark. As if guided by a supernatural strength, she headed back to the location of the village that had seen her in her human years. Surprising the Valkyrie, she realized that her heart tightened at the sight of this landscape that looked in no way like the place she had known, almost a century earlier.
Pained and lost by this discovery, the Valkyrie started exploring the area, only to bump by accident into another magical being in a bar. Pharos Lucent of the fire spiritual division. After a good chat around a cold Norse beer, Walharuna was convinced to try to teach at the Scottish school for magical beings. If she truly loved children as much as she claimed, she would be able to share her knowledge and make sure that the next generation would be equipped to fend for themselves.
She took the offer in no time.
