NAME: Osyth Ilwyngward; Guadian of the Byl Grove; Legio Malo,
AGE: like hella old
GENDER: Male
SCHOOLING YEAR: Staff
SPECIES: Guardian Spirit
PLACE OF ORIGIN: The Byl Grove, somewhere in northern England.
OVERALL PERSONALITY: Osyth is a strange character for a Guardian Spirit. While most of his kind are very calm and collected, he is wild and turbulent. He is also extremely bitter about the loss of his Grove and, while he enjoys his new job as the Custos Pacis, he's prone to bouts of sullen silence. He takes great pleasure into provoking fights, since he can't manifest without the presence of conflict.
LIKES: Fighting; goading others into fights; talking about his past; new students
DISLIKES: Being bored; technology; leaving the grounds
STRENGTHS: Very protective of the students- even thought he goads them into fights, he thinks that he's going them a favour by letting them blow off steam and never lets it get out of hand; Loyal, especially to the Headmistress, even though he chafes under her rules; Selfless- he will gladly sacrifice himself if it means saving others; Is well-known in British spiritual circles and can call in favours all across the country
WEAKNESSES: Cocky, like he's pretty sure he's the greatest fighter ever; Boasts a lot, he will run his mouth trying to make himself look cool; Gets bored really easily; Will go out of his way to destroy technology- he just hates it
FEARS: Losing the School like he did the Grove; Being rendered obsolete or unneeded
POWER(S): He is usually incorporeal, only manifesting where conflict happens. He also possesses super human reflexes and strength. Finally, he is able to suppress other forms of energy, be they technological or magical. However, these powers are only useful once he materializes- as long as you don't pick a fight, this guy can't manifest a physical form.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: His incorporeal form is just a dark-green will-o'-the-wisp about the size of a human hand. His physical form is that of a young man, completely hairless and with dark brown skin, almost like bark, with deep green eyes. He wears no clothes, but thankfully also lacks the bits that you'd usually cover with clothes, so it's all good.
HISTORY:
TL;DR: He's a Guardian Spirit from Northern England who kicked Roman ass, got his ass kicked by the Normans once and then kicked from his home to the School in the late 18th Century. Keeper of the Peace in the School.
Osyth was originally the Guardian of the Byl Grove, a small forest holy to the Celt pagans who lived there hundreds of years ago. He was not worshiped, but respected by the druids who made the ritual pilgrimage there year after year. Back then, Osyth was already fairly atypical when compared to the handful of other Guardian Spirits that dotted the country. He was more talkative, and would even show himself to non-druids who would venture into the Byl. He was known to play around with children in his will-o'-the-wisp form, manifesting physically if ever they were come upon by wolves or other, more dangerous creatures. As such, his grove became a popular one, a friendly and inviting place for people to live nearby. A small village, Trefbyl, was founded at his borders.
The tale of Osyth the Guardian of the Byl Grove truly came into its own in the middle of the first century AD, with the Roman Conquests of Britain. The Legions came sweeping through Celtic Britain, smashing the natives with their superior tactics and advanced weaponry. When they came to Trefbyl, however, they found an emptied village with blatant tracks leading to the nearby woods. Angry, the Legion followed the paths into the forest, where they came across a will-o'-the-wisp. Wary, knowing that will-o'-the-wisps can be capricious spirits, the Legion followed the wisp deeper into the forest, right into a Celt ambush. Osyth manifested fully there, invigorated by the power of the pagans he fought alongside. He, with token help from his mortal allies, pushed back the Romans from the Byl. The Legion made a few more attempts over the years, but were pushed back every time by what they had called Legio Malo, the Legion's Bane.
Eventually, Romans owned all of England, but not the Byl Grove. A new, uneasy status quo was established, with the Trefbylish existing in relative peace with the Romans. Attempts were made to introduce Christianity to the Trefbylish, but they were unsuccessful- it's hard to argue against a god that's right fricking there. When the Romans lost Britain a few centuries later, Trefbyl became something of a local power, being completely unaffected by the sudden power-vacuum created by the collapse of Roman Britain.
All good things had to end eventually, however. At the turn of the century, William the Conqueror swept through Britain with his Normans. Unlike the Romans, the Normans respected the power of the Spirits of the land, and managed to overwhelm Osyth's best efforts. The town of Trefbylish was destroyed, burnt to the ground; it's people put to the sword.
Osyth spent most of the next couple centuries bitterly angry at the loss of his people. He turned the Grove from one of the most friendly forests on the Isle to one of the most dangerous. Osyth would approach travelers and goad them into fighting each other, manifesting and ending the conflicts in the most brutal style possible. The Byl became synonymous with the wyrd and hostile nature of the wilds of England. Occasionally, a person would manage to break through to the angry Osyth. During these odd decades, Osyth would turn back to his old ways, playing with children and doing his best to avoid adults. Over time, he became more relaxed even without a mortal friend to keep him in check. Instead of killing travelers by goading them into dueling, he'd just kick their asses and send them running, laughing as he did.
In the summer of 1794, a messenger came to Osyth with a dire message: the Headmistress of the Scholae Elementorum had foreseen the destruction of the Byl Grove. Osyth laughed at the creature. He'd heard of the Headmistress a few decades earlier, when she was building the silly school, and, while he understood her worries, he claimed that he could handle whatever came his way.
He was wrong.
No one quite knows what happened that autumn, but Osyth came to the school in late December of that same year, on the Winter Solstice, homeless and with a burning hatred for technology of all kinds. He returned to his lowest point: bitter, angry, aggressive and destructive. With the help of the Headmistress, Osyth managed to heal over the next few centuries.
Once he had sufficiently recovered from the loss of his Grove, the Headmistress made Osyth the Custos Pacis, the Keeper of the Peace in the School Grounds, due to his abilities as a Guardian Spirit. He is a lot weaker now that he was as the Guardian of the Byl Grove, more mercurial and sanguine. His relationship with the Headmistress is an enigma to most people: despite their differences, they get along reasonably well. Her request is one of the only things that will spur Osyth to leave the School, and she entrusts a lot of the protection of the school in Osyth's hands.
